Solomon left the paper in November after internal shakeups and financial uncertainty among the paper's ownership. After a three-and-a-half-year hiatus, most of which was spent at Circa NewsSolomon returned to the paper in July to oversee the newspaper's content, digital and business strategies. He also helped launch a new subscription-only national edition targeted for tablets, cellphones and other mobile devices, and helped push a redesign of the paper's website.

Solomon left the paper in December to serve as chief creative officer of the mobile news application Circa, which was relaunching at that time. Circa is a mobile news application founded in that streams updates on big news events to users. In Juneit shut down, but its relaunch was announced after its acquisition by Sinclair Broadcast Group.

As chief of Circa, he wrote and published a number of political articles, often defending the Trump administration [16] and former U. Upon leaving Circa, Solomon became executive vice president of digital video for The Hill. In OctoberSolomon published an article in The Hill about the Uranium One controversy where he insinuated that Russia made payments to the Clinton Foundation at the time when the Obama administration approved the sale of Uranium One to Rosatom.

In Januaryit was reported that newsroom staffers at The Hill had complained about Solomon's reporting for the publication. Solomon published a story alleging that women who had accused Trump of sexual assault had sought payments from partisan donors and tabloids.

In AprilThe Hill published two opinion pieces by Solomon regarding allegations by Ukrainian officials that "American Democrats" and particularly former Vice-President Joe Biden of collaborating with "their allies in Kiev" in "wrongdoing Solomon's stories had significant flaws.

Prior to the publication of a story where Solomon alleged that the Obama administration had pressured the Ukrainian government to stop investigating a group funded by George SorosSolomon sent the full text of his report to Ukrainian-American businessman Lev Parnas and the two pro-Trump lawyers and conspiracy theorists Joseph diGenova and Victoria Toensing. During October hearings for the impeachment inquiry against Donald Trumptwo government officials experienced in Ukraine matters — Alexander Vindman and George Kent — testified that Ukraine-related articles Solomon had written and that were featured in conservative media circles contained a "false narrative" and in some cases were "entirely made up in full cloth.

Parnas worked with Solomon on interviews and translation. Solomon defended his work with Parnas: "No one knew there was anything wrong with Lev Parnas at the time.

Everybody who approaches me has an angle. Solomon has been mentioned in a draft report by the House Intelligence Committee pubished Dec.

The report documented phone records showing Solomon was in frequent contact with Lev Parnasa now indicted associate of Giuliani, exchanging "at least 10 calls" during the first week in April. Solomon was accused of breaking the traditional ethical "wall" that separated news stories from advertising at The Hill. He then had a quote from the group's director inserted into a news story about a Maine senator's key role in an upcoming vote on the Trump administration's tax bill.

In Septemberthe Washington Examiner reported that Solomon would leave The Hill at the end of the month to start his own media firm. In Octoberit was reported that Solomon was joining Fox News as an opinion contributor.

An internal Fox News research briefing book warned that "John Solomon played an indispensable role in the collection and domestic publication" of parts of the Trump-Ukraine "disinformation campaign," The Daily Beast reported in February Paul McCleary, writing for the Columbia Journalism Review inwrote that Solomon had earned a reputation for hyping stories without solid foundation.

Lang wrote that Solomon's story was "a clear demonstration of the influence opposition research is already having on coverage of the [presidential] campaign. The Washington Post wrote in September that Solomon's "recent work has been trailed by claims that it is biased and lacks rigor. InDeborah Howell, then-ombudsman at The Washington Postcriticized a story that Solomon wrote for The Post which had suggested impropriety by Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards in a real estate purchase; Solomon's reporting omitted context which would have made clear that there was no impropriety. The publication reviewed the former columnist's work after it came under scrutiny during the impeachment inquiry.

Ambassador to Ukraine Marie Yovanovitch, failed to identify "important details" about his sources — including that they were under investigation or indictment and were even his attorneys, according to a review of his work by his former colleagues.

In its review of 14 columns, The Hill's news team said serious doubts about the credibility of Solomon's Ukrainian sources were evident even before his interviews with them. Those include, most notably, two former Ukrainian prosecutors — Yuriy Lutsenko and Victor Shokin — who were the principal sources behind unsupported allegations of corruption by former Vice President Joe Biden and his son Hunter.

In other cases, the sources were his own attorneys," The Hill concluded. The Hill also raised questions — which it says remain unanswered — about Solomon's relationships with President Donald Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani and his associate Lev Parnas, who were central figures driving the suggestion of wrongdoing by the Bidens in Ukraine. Though Solomon has claimed he relied on Parnas as a "facilitator" to connect him with sources in Ukraine, Hill staff said the communications uncovered in the House impeachment investigation pointed to deeper ties.

The internal review by The Hill of Solomon's work answers few of the deeper questions about his role in the Ukraine saga. But it underscores the web of contacts that Trump relied on as his eyes and ears in Ukraine, bypassing official State Department channels in order to press the government there to investigate the Bidens, as well as other Democrats based on a debunked conspiracy theory that Ukraine — not Russia — hacked the Democratic Party in Solomon's columns were routinely amplified by Trump and featured on Fox News' prime-time opinion shows.

They also formed a significant part of the rebuttal to the House's impeachment charges by Trump's allies in Congress and his legal team. The network of Trump associates entangled in the Ukraine scandal also includes Joseph DiGenova and Victoria Toensing, husband and wife attorneys and allies of Trump whom Solomon quoted sporadically over the years on matters related to Ukraine.

DiGenova and Toensing also represent Dmitry Firtash, a Ukrainian oligarch with Russian ties who is fighting extradition to the United States on conspiracy and bribery charges. The Hill indicated that Solomon, in his columns quoting Toensing, failed to disclose that the pair also represented him.

TV appearances — that should have been made at the time of publication," the publication wrote. The Hill found that it failed in part by permitting Solomon to engage in work that had the appearance of investigative journalism despite being labeled as "opinion," a distinction that readers may have found confusing and that Solomon's boosters routinely blurred or ignored.

The publication also notes that Solomon, who left the publication to start a media company, continues to stand by his work. The Hill did not contact television producers to label Solomon as an opinion columnist. It should have," the review concluded. Skip to Main Content. The Hill finds John Solomon 'failed' to identify key details of sources The publication reviewed the former columnist's work after it came under scrutiny during the impeachment inquiry. The sex scandal that toppled Dominique Strauss-Kahn gripped the world with its salacious allegations, dramatic twists, and a stunning turnabout in court.

But the public saw only a fraction of what really went on behind the scenes, where justice played second fiddle to egos, political pressures, and investigative missteps. Now award-winning reporter John Solomon exposes the story you didn't know, delivering a searing indictment of American justice at its moment of intense international scrutiny.

When Strauss-Kahn arrived in New York on Friday, May 13,he was an international political powerhouse and favorite to win the French presidential election. By Monday, he was sitting in the notorious Rikers Island jail, his career in tatters. Likewise, when hotel maid Nafissatou Diallo arrived at work on Saturday morning, she never could have predicted that a brief encounter with a VIP guest would put her at the center of a legal and public relations battle that would leave her life in shambles.

Those seven minutes in Suite would throw international politics into turmoil, eliminate one of the key players in Europe's debt crisis, and create a trial by fire for Manhattan's rookie district attorney.

And it would all happen under the eye of a frenzied media which at first presumed guilt before suddenly turning the tables on the alleged victim. The public was left wondering: Was Dominique Strauss-Kahn guilty or innocent?

Solomon goes past the headlines to show how personal clashes, ambition, and media leaks took precedence over facts and evidence. He chronicles the personal battles that went on behind the scenes, from suicide worries to AIDS scares, and the toll they took on key players.

He lays out in gripping detail all the facts, good and bad, pro and con, so that finally the public can judge what really happened in one of the most fascinating criminal cases of the last decade. Sold by: Amazon. Skip to main content John Solomon. Something went wrong.

On Nov. So, who is John Solomon? The veteran Washington, D. A series of springtime articles he published about Ukraine helped kickstart the events at the heart of the impeachment inquiry. They gained traction as Trump, his allies and various Fox News hosts talked about them on TV and social media. Solomon did not respond to requests for comment sent to his Facebook page and personal lawyer.

Fox News also did not respond to requests for comment. Solomon worked for years at the Associated Press and briefly at the Washington Post before moving to the Washington Times, where he was editor in chief. Solomon won an award in for a series on what law enforcement knew ahead of the Sept.

But media critics also questioned his early work, saying he had a "history of bending the truth to his storyline" and "massaging facts to conjure phantom scandals. Then, in March and AprilSolomon published a series of columns alleging conspiracies involving Democrats and Ukraine. Senior State Department official George Kent later testified that what he had described as the "campaign of slander" against former U.

State Department official Catherine Croft said the same. He has stood by his work as "completely accurate and transparent," even as one impeachment witness after another has questioned his findings. He has been mentioned many more times, as well.

The column quoted Lutsenko falsely claiming that Yovanovitch gave him a list of people he should not prosecute, a charge the State Department denied and Lutsenko has since retracted. The column also claimed Yovanovitch had privately bad-mouthed Trump, citing a letter from former Rep. Yovanovitch denied both allegations during her testimony. But the allegations had already left their mark, having been promoted on Hannity and other Fox News programscirculated within right-wing media and tweeted out by Trump and his oldest son, Donald Trump Jr.

Yovanovitch was abruptly recalled from her post in May.

She remains a State Department employee, and it's unclear whether the administration will attempt to block her appearance. Perhaps there was some reason for that — that it can be explained away. But that's what we know and that's what we're going to be looking into. Hannity said multiple sources have told him they "believe there is evidence that government resources were used to monitor communications" of U.

Nunes noted that if the State Department had conducted surveillance over press activity in the Ukraine, it may have been done properly. Ambassador Yovanovitch should be given an opportunity and Secretary of State Pompeo should tell us what happened. Solomon is an investigative reporter who has made headlines for breaking stories related to the ongoing Ukraine controversy that have fueled Trump's support for Attorney General William Barr's review of the origins of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian interference in the presidential election.

Through Solomon, Giuliani injected his disinformation campaign straight into the heart of conservative media -- Fox News -- with seemingly full knowledge of at least some at Fox.

And eventually, Solomon landed a job at the network. It is now known that Trump blessed Giuliani to run a shadow foreign policy campaign in Ukraine, in which he sought information that would undermine the intelligence community's findings that Russia interfered in our election to benefit Trump.

Giuliani was also trying to dig up dirt to smear former Vice President Joe Biden, a front-runner to challenge Trump in the election. In March, Giuliani sent the results of his investigation to the State Department to be investigated and to conservative columnist John Solomon. The same month, Solomon began publishing a series of columns that mirrored the sourcing and claims Giuliani made in his State Department dossier.

Over the next six months, Solomon published 45 columns aimed at discrediting the Russia investigation, 12 of which focused primarily on Ukraine. Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman -- two Soviet-born con men with ties to Ukraine who worked with Giuliani to concoct the disinformation campaign and to get the U.

The two have since been arrested for campaign finance violations related to making allegedly illegal campaign donations to Republican candidates and committees, as well as a pro-Trump super PAC. They also reportedly worked for Dmitry Firtash. Dmitry Firtash -- a Ukrainian pro-Russian oligarch and former business associate of Paul Manafort who is in Austria fighting extradition to the United States to face charges related to a bribery conspiracy.

Victoria Toensing and Joe diGenova -- two attorneys closely tied to Trump who also worked with Giuliani to support his efforts in Ukraine. The two quietly represent Dmitry Firtash in fighting his extradition to the United States.

John Solomon -- a conservative columnist who until recently was the executive vice president of The Hill. Solomon was the conduit through which Giuliani, Parnas, Toensing and diGenova planted their stories in order to spread their coordinated disinformation campaign through the media.

Sean Hannity -- Fox News host who is close to Trump and worked with Giuliani to make his show an integral part of their media strategy, providing a place where they could sow the seeds of the smear campaign against Biden.

According to Parnas, his friendship with Giuliani began two years ago as they were running in similar political circles and attending the same events.

In lateParnas and Fruman began connecting Giuliani to a network of disgraced former and current Ukrainian officials and prosecutors to dig up dirt on Biden and the election. As with most conspiracy theories on the right, George Soros is involved in this one too.

The theory posits that a Ukrainian good governance, anti-corruption group -- the Anticorruption Action Centre AntAC -- was involved in framing Manafort and was corruptly tied to an FBI agent who was investigating Manafort. Giuliani also claims that an investigation into the group was shut down due to U.

Nothing about this conspiracy theory is true. In reality, the push to get the prosecutor in question, Viktor Shokin, fired was a part of an anti-corruption effort by advocates and international supporters of Ukraine. The investigation into the energy company whose board included Hunter Biden was long dormant, and Hunter Biden was never the subject of the investigation.

Around the same time Giuliani sent his packet of materials to the State Department, he also sent the materials to Solomon, who began reporting on its contents through the opinion pages of The Hill without identifying the materials as having originated with Giuliani. Over the next six months, Solomon published 45 columns aimed at discrediting the Russia investigation, 12 of which primarily focused on Ukraine. For instance:. He strongly suggested that the Obama State Department pressured Ukrainian officials to drop an investigation into a Ukrainian good governance group linked to Soros because Soros backed Clinton.

He also claimed the U. And, of course, he claimed that Biden withheld a billion dollars worth of U. Eight of the twelve columns Solomon wrote on the topic featured at least one of these five sources.

They appear to have been involved with his case much earlier than July, though.
